First, use the carbide sharpening slot to smooth irregularities and refine the angle of the blade edge. Next, the knife can be drawn through the ceramic sharpening slot to finish honing the blade to a refined, razor-sharp edge.

The Wusthof Classic Ikon knife sharpener features a 2 stage process to get your blades back to their factory razor sharp edge. The coarse slot features diamond rods to sharpen the edge of an extremely dull knife. The fine slot features ceramic rods to hone and finish the edge after the stage 1 sharpening.
