Our Richard's Patent nesting Knife, Fork, and Spoon combination exclusively reproduced with correct tulip shaped spoon and bearing the Civil War period mark of RICHARDS PATENT, JULY 23, 1861., and CAST STEEL. (the majority of the original examples we have handled or seen had this pointed tulip shaped spoon) Brushed and burnished to a bright finish just as in the period, copied from an original example in our research collection. There are two documented wartime versions of the markings on this item and we occasionally switch them in order to carry on our commitment to providing a more diverse representation of the material culture of the era. This design bears the arched name and the designation of CAST STEEL which was first developed in the 18th century, also known as crucible steel, a process which made a better and more refined blending of the alloys. It does not mean the item was cast - it speaks to the quality of the steel. By the mid 19th century it is seen stamped on a gamut of objects from the period (several documented in the Steamboat Arabia collection), used by manufacturers to designate their products as a cut above the norm in the quality of materials. (tools, weapons, cutlery, etc) It is debated whether this was actually true or more of a marketing gimmick by makers, as it was routinely used by many manufacturers, regardless of method or quality. (somewhat like calling something non-fat when it never had any) The main difference between this type and our other version, also copied from an original, is the position and configuration of the patent mark and packaging. (this item was also originally made with a large and smaller spoon bowl - both of ours represent the smaller more easily carried type) Diligent research still leaves it rather unclear which wartime mark may have been produced first, if not simultaneously. This item has been reproduced for many years, but, has unfortunately now become practically institutionalized in it's modern form, unmarked with a rounded end spoon. Ours comes complete in the handmade cardstock box, meticulously wrapped and sealed in period paper and packed in period surplus newsprint. Box bears a top outer label produced for the marketing agent, an inner label for the patentee, and an advert for the dealer/agent on the bottom. An SoFS exclusive, and proprietary labeling. (please help us protect our hard work and investments in packaging and copyrighted labeling. These labels have been pirated in the past for use with inferior products and packaging - please let us know if you see them being used by these unscrupulous frauds, devoid of 19th c. character, and we will place their names on our wall of shame. SoFS quality, sometimes copied - never duplicated!)
