Low Retention 

The Turin DF64 is a low retention grinder. Meaning there is less coffee that is retained in the burrs after the grinding process is completed. With traditional grinders that don’t have a tilted base, don’t have bellows and have a traditional coffee bean hopper, there is usually quite a few grams of coffee that remain in the burr chamber after the grind cycle has completed. The amount that remains behind depends on the grinder and burr size, but it is usually around 5 grams or more in some cases. With traditional grinders this retained coffee either ends up in the next day’s shot, or users have to purge this amount and discard for optimal flavor. With single dosing and the use of bellows, the amount that is retained in Turin DF64 is usually a percentage of a gram, especially after the silicon declumper has gotten more flexible with some initial use.

The design of the Turin DF64 is very straightforward and has minimalistic features that prevent points of failure from unneeded parts and features. With fewer parts, especially electronic parts, there are fewer points of failure. If something does go wrong, the solution is usually not complicated.

Heavy Duty Metal Construction

Almost everything on the DF64 is made with heavy duty metal construction. The base, body, dosing cup holder, adjustment collar and burr carriers are all made with solid metal. The body is aluminum with a durable vinyl wrap to get the color variations.

Color Variations

Due to the vinyl wraps on the Turin DF64, there are numerous color possibilities. The popular colors that people usually get are black, white, silver and unwrapped aluminum, but we do also offer it in an array of other colors, which we change from time to time. If someone is handy they can even remove the vinyl wrap and replace it with their own vinyl wrap of choice, so a unit could literally have a kaleidoscope of colors! 

Choose Your Burrs

We offer several burr options for the Turin DF64, including ItalMil stainless steel burrs, Italmil titanium burrs, SSP multipurpose burrs and SSP high uniformity burrs. The stainless steel burrs are a good standard burr that give good extraction results. The titanium burrs are identical to the stainless steel burrs, except the titanium coating helps the last sharper for about twice as long as the stainless steel burrs. The SSP burrs are outstanding burrs with outstanding results. They are considered by many to be the best burrs on the market. They are precision cut for the optimal ground coffee particles that yield optimal flavor. The coating on these burrs is very long lasting and can last sharp much longer than even the titanium coated burrs. We offer two types of SSP burrs – high uniformity and unimodal multipurpose. If you are someone that wants to make espresso based drinks as well as other types of coffee, then the multipurpose are probably the best choice. Both SSP options work well for espresso and which option is best for you will depend on the flavor you are looking for as well as the types of beans you use. SSP High Uniformity burrs are good for providing high mouthfeel, intense shots, balanced flavors with some floral / fruity flavors. They work well for all roast levels – light, medium and dark. SSP Unimodals have high clarity, sweet shots, well balanced with high extraction yields. They are best for higher brew ratios, such as 1:2, 1:3 or even more. They work best for medium and light roasts, but don’t work as well for dark roasts.

Stepless Adjustment

The Turin DF64 is a stepless adjustment grinder with an infinite number of settings between the highest and lowest settings on the grinder. This allows the user to fine tune the grind size to precisely the best grind size for each given coffee. The adjustment dial has labels for different types of coffees to make it easier to find the correct grind size, but those are for reference only and the grind size for every coffee bean can be fine tuned to both the individual bean attributes as well as the brew method.

Competitive Pricing

When you compare the Turin DF64 to other grinders in it’s price range it is very difficult to find anything that has as good build quality, as low retention, as sturdily built and that provides as high quality grinds as the Turin DF64.
